Dieses vom mFund (BMVI) geförderte Projekt unter der Leitung von Dr. Thomas König, Fernerkundung GbR war ein Meereisprojekt zur Weiterentwicklung einer Vorgängerstudie in welcher zunächst ein einfacher für NOAA-AVHRR entwickelter Eisdifferenzierungs-Algorithmus auf den neueren Copernikus Sentinel-3 SLSTR-Daten adaptiert werden sollte. Dies stellte sich als wesentlich komplizierter heraus als erwartet und resultierte in einem sehr umfangreichen Rechenwerk, das am Ende automatisch und ohne weitere manuelle Interaktionen ablauffähig gemacht werden konnte.

Darüber hinaus sollten erste Ideen erprobt werden, wie klassifizierte Sentinel-3-Daten mit ebenfalls vorhandenen Sentinel-1 Radar-Eisklassifikationen kombiniert werden könnten, um zukünftig verbesserte Informationen über die Eissituation auf Schiffen in Polargebieten in nahezu Echtzeit bereitstellen zu können.

Das Konsortium bestehend aus

     * K&P (optische/thermale Klassifikation und Verifikation sowie erste
        Fusionvorschläge der Datensätze optisch/thermal mit Radarsaten),
     * DLR (Sentinel-1 Eisklassifikation, Fusionsvorschlag zur Kombination mit
        Sentinel-1 Daten),

hat das Projekt im Juli 2019 erfolgreich abgeschlossen.

This project, funded by mFund (BMVI) and led by Dr. Thomas König, Fernerkundung GbR, was a sea ice project for the further development of a previous study in which a simple ice differentiation algorithm developed for NOAA-AVHRR was initially to be adapted to the newer Copernikus Sentinel-3 SLSTR data. This turned out to be much more complicated than expected and resulted in a very extensive set of calculations, which in the end could be run automatically and without further manual interactions.

In addition, initial ideas were to be tested on how classified Sentinel-3 data could be combined with existing Sentinel-1 radar ice classifications in order to provide improved information on the ice situation on ships in polar regions in near real time in the future.

The consortium consists of

     * K&P (optical/thermal classification and verification as well as initial
        fusion proposals of the optical/thermal data sets with radar data),
     * DLR (Sentinel-1 ice classification, fusion proposal for combination with
        Sentinel-1 data),

completed successfully the project in July 2019.
